Our Trustees:

Peter V Darrow, Chairman
I am a partner of a large law firm in New York City.  I was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, U.S.A. in 1950 and attended Columbia University, and thereafter obtained a post-graduate degree in political science from Trinity College, Oxford, UK. I have been working as a lawyer since graduating from the University of Michigan in 1978.

I was introduced to The Cambodia Trust by Founder Patron Dr Peter Carey, and was responsible for establishing the Trust’s US organisation - American Friends of Cambodia Trust.  I became a Trustee in 2001 and subsequently became Chairman in 2005.

A keen runner, I endeavour to run every morning, regardless of which part of the world I happen to be in!

Dr Peter Carey, Deputy Chair and Founder Patron

I am Laithwaite Fellow and Tutor in Modern History at Trinity College, Oxford, specialising in the modern history and politics of Indonesia, Burma and East Timor.  Born in Rangoon in 1948, I graduated with First Class Honours in Modern History at Oxford in 1969, and went on to

study and research at Cornell University (USA), at the University of Leiden (Holland) and in Indonesia.

I am a founder Patron and Trustee (1989 to present) of The Cambodia Trust and I was one of the inceptors and co-founders of the Dhamma School in Brighton (est. 1994), the only Buddhist primary school in Europe. I have served as Executive Director of the Asian Studies Centre at St Antony’s College, Oxford and as a member of the Asia Committee of Oxfam.

I was given the Timorese independence medal by the Government of the Democratic Republic of East Timor for my work in establishing the National Centre for Physical Rehabilitation in Dili.

In 2006 the Portuguese Government appointed me a Grand Official in the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator in recognition of the work done in East Timor, both before and after independence.

Mark Affonso

Born in Trinidad in 1963, I moved to England in 1979 where I completed my education, studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Magdalen College, Oxford, UK.  I have since enjoyed a career in financial management and accounting in global not-for-profit environments.

I was introduced to Cambodia Trust by former Trustee Dr Stewart Mercer and became a Trustee in 2005.   My specific responsibility is that of Chairperson of the Finance Committee.

I am married with two children and am a keen singer and an adventurous cook.

Robert M Fowler

I was born in London in 1947.  I have been a supporter of the Cambodia Trust since 1991 and a trustee since 1999.  My first trip to the country, which included visiting our facilities in Phnom Penh and Kompong Som, goes back to 1994.

In addition to the Trust's specific area of work, I have an interest in the culture of Cambodia, particularly the arts of the theatre.  At university I studied Slavonic languages, became a teacher, and later a translator (working for a press agency).

I moved from England to France four years ago.  France has, as you will know, a much larger Khmer community, particularly in Paris (where I live) and its surroundings, than the United Kingdom, which means that I have the opportunity to enjoy Cambodian culture abroad.

Joy Irvine

Born in Adelaid, South Australia, I have a teaching and educational administration background and have taught in countries as diverse as Australia, Vanuatu (South Pacific), Northern Territories, China and Cambodia (Phonm Penh).

I have been associated with Cambodia Trust for 11 years now, some of that time spent working full-time in an HR capacity.  I was very proud to be nominated by the staff to be their representative on the board and became a Trustee in 2001.  A keen family member, I have four children, ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Edward McBriar

I am a chartered accountant and a retired group finance director in the construction sector.

I am married to Liz with a daughter, Lisa, son-in-law, David and three grandchildren, Conor (5), Emma (3) and Zoe (6 months).

I live in the village of Hillsborough in Co. Down, Northern Ireland and am an elder in the local Baptist Church.  My other interests are travelling and, alas, now only watching rugby.

I joined Cambodia Trust in January 2005 as trustee with specific financial responsibilities and attend SLSPO board meetings in Sri Lanka.

Kenneth McCrea

I was born in Scotland and "emigrated" south of the border over twenty years ago and have been a Prosthetist / Orthotist for more years than I would care to admit to.

I currently work as a Principal Prosthetist for Blatchford's and have a roving role, working at many limb fitting centres throughout the U.K.

I also represent our professional body on various committees in the amputee rehabilitation field.

In 2005 I was extremely proud to be awarded the Douglas Bader Foundation and Limbless Association award for Outstanding Service by an Individual Professional.

In my spare time I run a small charitable Prosthetic clinic in Romania visiting around six times a year to treat disabled children and adults who have not received any help with their disability.  I became a Trustee of Cambodia Trust in February 2006.

I go to the gym regularly, at least for times a year, whether I need to or not!

Lalith de Mel

I was educated in Colombo, Sri Lanka and attended Cambridge University in the UK, where I completed a Tripos in Economics.  I also undertook the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School in 1990.

I was awarded the Deshamanya title (Pride of the Nation) by the Government of Sri Lanka in 2005.

I have enjoyed a long career in the commercial sector, having been a director of 36 companies, of which 23 were companies abroad.  I currently spend two weeks a month in Sri Lanka, and am the Chairman of Hemas Holdings Ltd., a Director of Delmege Forsyth & Co. Ltd., Serendib Hotels Ltd., Serendib Leisure Management Ltd. and Chairman of the Tourism Cluster in the National Council for Economic Development.  I became a Trustee of the Cambodia Trust in March 2006.

Krisna Uk

Krisna Uk

A recent member of the Board of Trustees, I first heard of the Cambodia Trust through British and Khmer acquaintances while living in the UK in 2001.

I was born in France in 1975 where most of my maternal side of the family resides.

Although I was raised near Paris my parents are Cambodian and I have worked on issues relating to Cambodia throughout my academic and professional career.

During my post-graduate degree in Comparative Literature at the Sorbonne in Paris IV I conducted research into the narrative structures of the Khmer ballet-theatre. I then spent a year at UC Berkeley in California researching forestry and wildlife issues in Cambodia. In 2002 I obtained an MSc in Environmental Change and Management at Oxford University, where I was examining the environmental impact of anti-personnel landmines on agriculture land in Battambang province. Thereafter I spent three years working as Project Development Officer for Norwegian People's Aid on landmine and UXO clearance issues in Cambodia and Lao PDR. I am currently doing a PhD in Social Anthropology at Cambridge studying the local perceptions of risk in Cambodian and Lao communities that are most affected by unexploded ordnances (UXO) as a result of thirty years of war and internal conflicts.
